Display Pictures

Last year I made these for girls camp. We hung them on the girls bunk beds. They were simple to make. I just grabbed some string and started tying fabric and ribbon on it. I found some shower curtain rings at Wal-Mart that I tied to the ends. The YW loved them! There is something about pictures that makes the YW feel united. Maybe it's capturing the memories of good times?? I'm not sure but I do know everyone loves a good picture.

These would be a fun display for new beginnings or even YWIE :) Make memories and share them!

Glass Jar Lantern

This is an idea we used at girls camp this past year. Our girls loved them. I can't tell you enough how much I love lanterns and even better they were practically free to make. We used battery powered tealights from the dollar store (they come two in a pack). That was for those who are worried about a bunch of YW carrying around fire at camp! Ahhh! Scary!

Do you know how hard it is to take a picture of something in the dark?! Crazy! The process of making this lantern was simple. I had a ton of canning jars sitting in my pantry. I pulled them out and cleaned them. I then cut out different shapes on my Cricut (I used contact paper). We are doing a flower theme in our cabin but I couldn't resist some polka dots! Oh I should mention you totally don't have to have a Cricut for these projects. It just makes life a whole lot easier (If you live by me you can come over and use mine). You can cut the shapes out by hand. Stick whatever shapes you choose on your jar and spray a glass frosting all over your jar. Here is a picture of the kind I used...
I purchased mine from Michaels. Bring your 50% of coupon (With the coupon I believe it's about $4.00) and it does about 25 jars. Not bad! I love this stuff. It dries within minutes and I could handle the jars. I tried another brand that was more expensive and came in a small spray can. It took FOREVER to dry (I'm not a patient person when it comes to crafts) and it also had a slight yellow tint to it. Go for the Valspar!

I do recommend you give it time to dry (do as I say not as I do!). After they are dry peel off the contact paper shapes and you are almost done. Last I added the wire as a handle. I think they ended up pretty cute. Can't you see a bunch of YW carrying these around? These lanterns would be fun as centerpieces for YWIE also!

Go HERE for a wire handle tutorial :)

YWIE 2009

I build mountains and move them too:) Well that is paper mountains. This is what we did as decorations for Young Women in Excellence (YWIE).

A while back we are were brainstorming as a YW presidency and somehow we got onto the idea of doing silhouettes. Not just any ordinary silhouette but a mountain with girls each carrying a light to the top. The concept was that the girl would carry a light as a symbol of her being an example for all to see (you can't see it very well in the picture but the silhouette girls are carrying tea lights). I'm into mountains. What can I say?! I liked the idea of the girls climbing a mountain because it is an incredibly hard journey (kind of like life). When at the top you can see for miles. Shine your light for all to see...right?!
The concept goes perfectly with the "Be Thou an Example" theme. We felt it needed a little more to relate the theme so we added this verse from 3rd Nephi 18:24 "... hold up your light that it may shine unto the world...". At the time we felt like it was a good idea and it all came together so nicely. It just fit. We had no idea how well it was going to go with the entire night.

A little background of the prep for the night is needed. This year our YW stake presidency decided to have a stake YWIE. It sounded like a wonderful idea to me. They gave each ward an assignment (some wards assigned to work together). Most wards were also assigned a value. We each were to do a creative 5 minute value presentation with our YW. Our ward was assigned to decorations and divine nature.

Typically in the past we decided some sort of theme and revolved the night around it. Such as last year our YWIE theme was "I believe...". We had a light, star theme that the decoration revolved around. The stake didn't give us certain direction other than it was "Be Thou an Example". We went big...mountain big :)

As we sat back and enjoyed the night. We laughed that this mountain was our YWIE project. It took over 10 hours to make, set up and clean up. You should have seen me on the super tall latter! It was worth every minute...

I believe we were inspired building that mountain. It took a lot of time and effort but it was worth every moment. The YW loved it. It was fun to see people not only taking pictures of it but standing in front of it posing for pictures. That wasn't even the most rewarding part. The most rewarding part was when you put a bunch of wards together who hadn't communicated about what they were doing and somehow, someway it all came together. For example the opening song sang by a YW group was "A Light on a Hill". They sang it in front of our mountain. Another group during their 5 minute presentation actually read 3rd Nephi 18:24. Her talk was about the scripture. It just happened to be displayed behind her on the mountain. Feeling, listening and taking action to inspiration feels good! I'm grateful for a Heavenly Father who knows me, loves me and helps me. I need Him often! I'm grateful He has chosen me to help lead His youth. I truly feel blessed.

Medallion Night

Lately I have been reading about moms having a celebration when their daughters receive their Young Womanhood Recognition. I think it is a fabulous idea. Anyone who has worked on personal progress knows there is a lot of heart and soul that goes in to it. In my area this concept of a celebration isn't happening. Our YW presidency decided we couldn't go without acknowledging these most excellent girls.

Tonight for mutual we are having a medallion night with those who have received that honor as our special guests. Some of the YW will be speaking about the work that went into getting their medallion and how it feels when you meet that goal (Be Thou an Example!!!). It will be good for both speakers and listeners. It's always fun to have a night that honors you and the listeners have a good example to look up to. I wanted to do something special for these girls but not sure what. I'm sure the older YW are completely tired of the wood stuff I make :) This is what I came up with....
Each of the Yw that have received their medallion will get one of these personalized books. We are going to pass them around and let the other YW write their congrats.

I'm a fan of pictures. Always will be. I think at this point I probably have about 2,000 pictures of our YW. I need to put them to good use. Each book will have four pictures in it. 2 YW group pictures and 2 pictures of them with closer friends.

I'm most likely going to put kits of this project in my shop. First I need to see if the girls like these are not :)

YW Washers

I love finding a good "How To" when I want to learn how to do something new. I like all the goods...words, pictures and videos. Well I don't have a video for you today because I don't feel like being in it but I do have some words and pictures for you! What project are we going to learn the How to's of? Today it's my YW value washers. Really this is called we have a ton of YW and we don't have the budget to go out and buy the jewelry so I used washers! I think it's totally fab!

OK! Let's start with the materials you will need to complete this project. You will need a steel stamping set. This one is from Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/). There are many places online that sell these sets.

You are going to need washers. I got this from my oh so kind father-in-law. If you don't have one of those head on down to Home Depot.

Finally a nice heavy hammer and a hard surface where your hammering can take place. I do mine on the garage floor. Don't do it on your table...Your asking for trouble (I only know because I tried!).

The rest seems pretty obvious. You pick out the letters you need and hammer the stamp into the washer. Some tips...Pound your hammer down one to two times. Sometimes if you aren't holding the stamp firmly it jumps and you end up with a messed up letter. Also be aware that the washers are thicker than the jewelry pieces so you will have to do it harder than you would on a thin piece of jewelry metal.

When you are done it will look something like this...

Next step is to take a sharpie (love them) and color in your stamped washer.

It will look something like this.... I know a BIG MESS!!

Immediately after you color the washer you take a baby wipe and rub off the top mess.

That's it! Your done!

Remember when I said I don't have a video for you well I just remembered a good one I found 0n youtube! Here are some videos and a website that were very helpful to me...

Young Women Stuff

This is one mama jammer post. It's all about YW. I know so many of you come to look at me and oh baby my cute children so if you aren't interested in my YW stuff stop now! I like to post this stuff so I can remember it and if people ask me for ideas I can show them the stuff I've been involved in. With that in mind here we go............

YOUNG WOMEN IN EXCELLENCE (YWIE)

This year for YWIE we knew we were going to title it "I Believe". Decorations were white lights, Christmas trees and stars (pictures above). We talked about having all the YW writing their testimonies and displaying them in some way at YWIE. We had a Sunday lesson all about testimonies, how to strengthen them and how we are all at different points in our testimonies. The girls then had the opportunity to start working on their testimonies. We knew this was going to be good for the girls. We have a huge amount of beehives and also non-members attending YW right now.

The following mutual we again talked about testimonies and how they come in different forms. First I explained the testimony I was going to read came from a man who knew he was going to die and then read Bruce R. McKonkie's (I'm a big fan of him!!) written testimony. If you haven't read it yet check it out HERE for some background and HERE for his testimony. It's powerful!

We then experienced testimony through song. I had my good friend Meagan and her sister Ellynn come in and sing "I Believe in Christ". Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! After that the YW watched this slide show. I bought this DVD titled "Reflections of Christ". It is so good. This is just the slide show (all we had time to watch in YW) but you can also watch the photographer work and the people in the pictures bear their testimonies. (Don't forget to turn my music off at the way bottom of my blog!!!!...and to my brother I know you can't stand my music.)

After this the girls again worked on their testimonies. This is how we displayed the testimonies on the tables at YWIE.

Here are the invites made by creative Traci and Emily!

I didn't get to take any pictures of the programs or of the actual event because I was just too crazy! I'm so ticked!

Our program went something like this....We started out with singing "I believe in Christ. Three girls were chosen to talk about what their projects were and what they learned. Our YW are amazing! They did a fab job. After that we let everyone walk around and look at the projects and grab some dessert and sit down to watch this video...

After that our new Stake YW president spoke about being constant as the north star. I loved her talk! She is truly amazing! The Bishop had concluding remarks. He had the moms come up and share one thing they would want the YW to know. MOMS ROCK!

At the end of the night the girls got to go to the Christmas tree and take and ornament home

I probably forgot a ton of other things. So if you want to pick my brain shoot me a comment!

NEW BEGINNINGS (NB)

The plans for NB are still in the works but I thought I would share some of what we have planned. Our theme is going to be the mutual theme for this year. We will be having it the Wednesday before Valentines day. So you know hearts will be involved. We are going to have a board with pictures of our 5 new beehives coming in. The plan is to make our own conversation hearts out of paper with words about the girls around their pictures. On smaller hearts around the room we will have pictures of the current YW. For dessert we are going to make heart sugar cookies with value color frosting. Mmmmm!

I don't know the order it's exactly going to happen yet but at some point the new beehives will be introduced. We also are going to do something like a progressive dinner (It's the beginning of the idea. Dinner isn't invlolved.)....the new girls will travel to 9 different rooms: Be Thou and Example, Faith, Divine Nature, Individual worth, Knowledge, Choice and Accountability, Good Works, Integrity and Virtue. The current YW will be partnered up in these rooms to teach the new beehives about the new theme and values. They will have the rooms decorated accordingly. For example when the girls go into the Faith room all the decorations will be white. The older YW will tell the value (Faith), the color (White), say the scripture that goes with the value, say the little saying that goes with the value and then they both will tell the girls one thing they love about YW.

In the Be Thou An Example room they will receive a dog tag necklace with the theme hand stamped (Can't show a picture yet!) on them and a organza bag. As they go around to the different rooms they will pick up these.....

They won't be able to wear them all at one time but maybe when they are struggling with a value, working on one in personal progress or it's the value of the month they could wear it! I will post more pictures when I get them!

LAST but not least are the projects Wendy and I have come up for the new mutual theme. We have come up with three diferent project kits. Here are what the finished products can look like...

Does the BE look familiar? LOL! Make it a great day. BLOG OUT!

OH...I forgot! Here are the patterns (It's your lucky day!)
